Taste of Garlic

1991–present

punk funk rap rock

Taste of Garlic formed in the summer of 1991 at the Art Institute of Houston, growing out of jam sessions that started with Dead Kennedys covers before evolving into a raw funk/rap hybrid. Original singer Jason Koon eventually departed and was replaced by Brian Clements (a.k.a. Marky Ice/BC), with Brent Himes on guitar, Brian Holland on drums, and a rotating cast of bass players including Jason Davis. Often compared to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and described as an "X-rated version of the Beastie Boys," TOG built a loyal following through frequent shows at Fitzgerald's and other Houston venues. They were infamous for opening sets with a six-foot bong passed through the crowd. The band released a seven-inch single, the 1995 cassette "Chunky Style," and the CD "mydixiewrecked" recorded at Uptown Recordings in Houston between February 1995 and May 1996. The band plays occasional reunion shows.
