Lower

1995 - 2001

alternative rock metal

Nu-Metal band from Texas formed in 1995.

Formed in '95 with no real idea of the sound we were going for (or would find) we threw together all of our contrasting musical influences and ideas to form lower. We found a new sound, similar to some of the new stuff coming out, yet very different, very unique. Heavy, but not metal, instead with a hip-hop vibe, slammin beats, explosive intense live shows with a contagious energy. An energy that draws you in and makes you listen then makes you move.

In summer of '96 lower released 'Back to Me', our first tape. 8 songs recorded and mixed in only 2 days, yet so well received in the Houston music scene we sold all of the tapes (a few hundred) within two months. Just 5 months later lower won a recording package at a battle of the bands and headed back into the studio. Re-recording 'no suprise', plus two brand new songs. The loud, in your face, energetic 'Vent' and the heavy more melodic 'Have we grown so cold...?' which are still to this day crowd favorites. The untitled 3 songs demo once again sold out at close to light-speed and still to this day we get asked if we have any copies left!

Since then, having played 100's of shows, including opening for such bands as bloodlet, man will surrender, Snot, sevendust, human waste project, and Incubus. Then on August 28th 1998 a show that would change the Houston music scene for ever. lower and 2 other local favorites Given and Fail put together a BIG show at the Abyss. A club that had seen almost everyone come through and play there. Deftones, orange 9mm, Limp Bizkit, Snot, (hed) pe, Clutch, Soulfly even kicked off their first world tour there!!! The show would consist of 8 of the phattest Houston bands all for $8 and all the bands giving out free merch all night long. With over 700 people in attendance and 7 bands having already played, lower's set was delayed for 25 minutes while the cops and fire marshall decided wether to shut the show down with just one band left to play and hundreds of fans waiting patiently until lower was finally givin the 'ok' and rocked the house at what would be the Abyss's last show ever. The club was shut down the next day.

Having been featured on two broken note records compliations and the 'bleak' compliation in France, on which System of a down, Snot, (hed) pe and many other new bands were featured and with three other studio sessions from which nothing had been released in early '99 lower decided to release a 'bootleg' cd containing 16 songs, including everything off of the first two tapes. After selling a few hundred of these, we have recently discontinued them and are recording material for a new cd.
