Academy Black
1987-1992
Academy Black was a crossover thrash metal band begun in 1987. Featuring David Yammer (aka "Kommando Poet") on vocals, Jeff Mikel on guitar, Damon Gill on bass, and Greg Main on drums — with Blair Ashby and later Billy Lovelace on guitar — the band delivered a sound that was psychedelic, original, and hard to pin down. They were regulars at the Axiom, sharing the stage with bands like dead horse, Pain Teens, Sprawl, and Bayou Pigs.
Their track "Seven Views" appeared on the Voices of a Red God compilation (Saturn Records, 1990), and the band's initial run ended around 1992. Academy Black has reunited occasionally since, most notably at the Axiom 20th Anniversary Reunion in 2007 at Fitzgerald's, where they performed with special guest Michael Haaga of dead horse.
